A legal team that tracks counterfeits around the world needed to see every case in one place, so I redesigned the platform they work in.
I led the product and visual redesign of an internal case-management platform that a global technology company's legal team uses for counterfeit and trademark enforcement. Creating a matter, uploading evidence, and finding a case got simpler, and new dashboards showed where enforcement activity was concentrated.

The people protecting the brand were working around their own tool.
The company's legal team manages counterfeit and trademark threats through an internal platform that tracks investigations, seizures, and enforcement activity worldwide. Attorneys, analysts, and operations staff all depend on the platform, and they share its records with customs and investigative partners.
The legacy platform had an outdated interface and fragmented workflows. Those problems slowed people down, hid activity from the teams who needed to see it, and weakened trust in the data. My brief was to improve usability and case-tracking accuracy, streamline global enforcement workflows, bring the experience in line with the company's design guidelines, and give executives dashboards they could act on.
I started with an audit and kept legal and engineering in the room until the end.
The overhaul covered the whole platform, from the first screen an attorney sees to the design system underneath every screen. Click or tap a card to turn it over.
Every case starts the same way, and every case can be found again.
Enforcement work lives or dies on records. A missed filing deadline with customs or a court can let a shipment go, and a case that nobody can find helps nobody. I simplified the three things people did most: creating a case, uploading evidence, and communicating across teams.
Each case page uses the same section menu as the form that created it, so an attorney who filed a matter already knows where everything sits when the case comes back.
- Creating a matter asks for the required fields first and points to anything missing before it saves.
- Uploading evidence offers ready-made templates and lets people add files to an existing case or start a new one.
- Every document carries a personal information flag, so sensitive files are marked before they spread.
- Search filters by program, owner, and column, and the term people search for is highlighted in every result.
- Assigned matters put a person's own cases in one list, with updates, uploads, tasks, and approvals a tab away.
Open a case the way an analyst would.
I rebuilt the platform as a working prototype from my design files, with AI writing the code from my designs. The product name, matters, people, and numbers are all invented sample data.
Things to try
- Choose New, then New matter, and press Submit with the form empty to see the errors.
- Search for Seller 1042 to highlight every case that names that seller.
- Open a case, then use Actions to escalate the case or close it.
- Choose Upload, add a sample file, and attach it to a case.
- Open Assigned matters and post an update on one of your cases.
A calm, light system let the case data do the talking.
My design system set a 12-column grid, one type family, and color that appears only when color means something. I refreshed it for the prototype with today's softer cards and rounded controls, and every text color passes current contrast standards.
Color
- Smith blue
#0062C4Primary buttons, links, charts, focus rings, and the current item in every menu - Pressed blue
#004F9EHover and pressed states for blue buttons, and the label of the current menu item - Ink
#1D1D1FHeadings, body text, and the dark Actions and Submit buttons - Secondary gray
#636366Labels, hints, and supporting text - Canvas gray
#F5F5F7The page background, tiles, and task cards - Line gray
#D2D2D7Field borders, dividers, and secondary buttons - Alert red
#C4001AHigh priority, documents flagged for personal information, and escalations - Indigo

Section menu
The same list of sections runs down the side of the create form and the case page, so people learn the layout once.
Status and priority pills
Soft tinted pills show open, pending, and closed cases and how urgent a task is, with the words always inside the color.
Search table with column filters
Every column has a sort control and its own filter, and the searched term is highlighted wherever it appears.
Evidence drop zone
Files can be dropped, browsed, or added from a template, and each one gets a document tag and a personal information flag.
Actions menu
One dark button at the top of a case holds the status changes, escalation, and upload, so the heavy decisions sit in one place.
Assigned matters list
A filtered list of a person's own cases sits beside tabs for details, schedule, updates, uploads, tasks, and approvals.
Principles
- Use color only when it tells people something about the case.
- Give every screen the same search, breadcrumbs, and section menu.
- Ask for what a case needs up front and point to anything missing.
- Flag sensitive documents the moment they enter the system.
Over $9M
in goods recovered in one of the company's largest counterfeit seizures, which the platform's improved intelligence sharing helped enable
Cases got easier to track, and the intelligence behind them got easier to share.
The redesign gave the legal team and its partners one platform they could trust for enforcement work. Click or tap a card to turn it over.
I mapped the platform's next steps toward predictive intelligence.
I recommended expanding the dashboards to support predictive intelligence, adding advanced analytics for proactive threat detection, and scaling the design system components across the legal team's full suite of enforcement tools. The same habits shape my AI-native product work today: show people what the data says, say how sure the system is, and leave the decision with the expert.
There is plenty more where this came from.
